About Insights

Our monthly meetings, held both in-person and online, offer a chance to share experiences, gain valuable insights, and foster resilience. We also host casual social gatherings for a relaxed way to connect with others. Family, friends, and carers are welcome, as we believe that a strong support network is vital for well-being.

Insights Mental Health Support Group Ballarat is a non-profit organization founded in 2004, originally established to support individuals with bipolar disorder. Since then, we've evolved into a more inclusive support group for those experiencing a range of mental health challenges, including mood, personality, anxiety, phobia, and psychosis disorders, as well as those facing emotional difficulties and social isolation.

Our group has had several homes, beginning at former Aprotch building in Ballarat, then later moving to Wellways, Ballarat. We’ve relaunched three times, each expansion allowing to support more people in our community. In 2019, with support from the Victorian Mental Illness Awareness Council (VMIAC), we successfully launch a website. As of 2024, Insights is currently under the auspice by the Victorian Mental Illness Awareness Council (VMIAC).

Our monthly meetings have previously invited guest speakers such as musicians, artists, healthcare professionals, and mental health advocates, who cover a variety of topics—from navigating the NDIS to accessing local support services and building personal capacities. Insights is volunteer-managed, supported by the help of donations, grants, and with assistance from the Department of Health and and VMIAC.

Since COVID-19, we adapted to a hybrid format, allowing members to join either face-to-face, by phone and through the app Zoom.

Poetry

Notes on poetry and songs.

I write my poems and songs in a similar way. Just in the course of my reflections on an event, a line of language or a concept comes to mind. For example, I think, “Love is the only way home” in thinking over the events of a day. And then I think – “That wouldn’t be a bad line for a poem or song”. Then I try to write it. Or I get an idea that navigating mental illness is a bit like being trapped in a space craft where you can see the earth and other people below you, but try as much as you like, you can’t reach them. And then try to write out how that might be true.

My method there is simple too – a kind of formula of coming back to the central idea of the poem and finding a set of ways of looking at the theme.

My theory on what works as a work of art is pretty simple too. Rule one - A good poem or song gets the listener or reader in first of all. There must be an appeal of the music or the way the lines come out that attracts the reader’s or listener’s attention. Rule two – Once you have the person in, the poem or song should keep that attention through to the end of the piece. Rule three – there should be something given by the poem or song that means that the listener or reader comes out richer at the end of the song or poem than before they started.

And that’s it. I hope you enjoy the poems.

Abstract Art

Artists Statement

My artwork delves into my inner world, using form and line. Each piece begins as an open experiment; I work without a fixed plan, focusing on creating something visually unique and engaging. My work is often vibrant and expressive, reflecting my moods and energy levels. I strive for balance through free-flowing forms, dynamic brushstrokes, and a blend of colours and shading.

My influences blend the subconscious, outsider art, abstract art, and the practice of automatic drawing. I draw inspiration from subconscious thoughts about self-perception, embodiment, and my understanding of the mind. The rawness of Outsider art resonates with me, as does the nature of automatic drawing. Working this way allows me to create freely, often resulting in a process that feels cathartic and grounding.

Artists like Joan Miró, Wassily Kandinsky, Roberto Matta, Nick Blinko and James Gleeson inspire me with their bold colors and surreal, dreamlike visions.

Poetry and Lyrics

Street/Graffiti art

Artist Statement

I create art using watercolors, pens, markers, and aerosols, working on materials like watercolor paper and pre-prepared wood. I love wood for its ease of use and its ability to showcase my work without the need for framing.

My inspiration comes from the energy of bright colors, strong lines, and interesting shapes. I’m drawn to street art and detailed drawings, especially when they show creativity and good composition. Bright, bold designs always catch my eye and influence my work.

My art focuses on color, character, and quirkiness. I aim to create pieces that are visually striking and full of personality, with creative linework and whimsical themes. My style is sharp, bright, contoured, and quirky, bringing a unique perspective to familiar ideas.

I hope my art offers viewers a fresh way of seeing things—highlighting the brightness, energy, and detail in each piece.

Insights submission into 'The Disability Royal Commission'

In 2022, Insights had the opportunity to contribute to a policy submission into the Federal Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with a Disability. To gather insights from our community, we held two meetings to hear suggestions and concerns.

Key topics raised included homelessness risks, navigating supported residential services, and challenges navigating the NDIS. We also proposed changes to improve the discharge process from mental health services, aiming to support and promote recovery.
